Super Meat Boy is intense. I loved playing it. I hated playing it. I loved to hate it. This is one of those games that was just crazy, addictive fun. Every time I died it had me running back and going “Okay, one more try.” For the first time in YEARS, I got a thumb blister from playing this so much. That’s saying something.

The game has a lot of humor and most of it is pretty great and the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic.

For the extremely low amount of money that I paid for this title (significantly less than 5 bucks in a Humble Indie Bundle) I got SO much enjoyment out of it. Just trying to beat the main (light side) levels can take you hours and then there are the dark side levels and all of these little side missions and mini-games. It’s amazing.

The one thing that I will count against it (and it’s just a pet peeve of mine) is the fans/gravity generators. These things are one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to platforming because the player doesn’t have a great way of controlling them and it’s sort of left up to the physics which the designer programmed into the game.

In particular, level 7-7 (entitled “Tunnel Blower”) was probably the most infuriating of the levels - albeit so simple. All the player needs to do is ride the air currents across, grab the key, ride one back and jump up and into the goal. The problem is that the fans will just drop you if you hit them at the wrong angle - or shoot you up too high. What’s the difference between the right or wrong angle? Not enough and the result is that it’s pretty much a toss up as to whether or not you’ll make it safely or be sent flailing to your doom.

I eventually beat the level, but I wasn’t happily excited so much as I was glad for it to just be over and no, I don’t equate those two feelings and I don’t like designers who do.

In any case, (it should come as no surprise that) Super Meat Boy is totally worth the money and if you’re looking for a cheap game that will keep you raging and stuck to your chair for “just one more try” - this is it.

I can’t even watch videos of this game without wanting to go back and play - it makes me physically tense up! I hate it. I love it. Go play it.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is one of the best games I’ve ever played. This is not hyperbole - this is fact. If not for 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors, it would be the best DS game I’ve ever played.

The game starts in a way that is guaranteed to grab your attention and it really never lets up. The puzzles aren’t annoying - most of them are JUST difficult enough to make you think and feel rewarding when you realize you’ve got it - if you start to have trouble, the game gives you little hints. It’s fun!

The characters are funny, the animation is incredible, and the game mechanics factor back into the story in a really cool way.

It’s not often that I have nothing negative to say, but I really think that this game is pretty perfect. There aren’t many lulls and if anyone hates this game then it’s probably because they just don’t like puzzles or fun, so I don’t know why you’re reading this.

Long and the short of it: Go get it!!! (If you don’t have a DS you can grab this gem on your iPhone/iPod now!)

Battle Royale vs. The Hunger Games

I was going to write a long article about it and maybe I still will, but seriously, folks. They have VERY little in common - I’m a big fan of both (in fact I own multiple copies of Battle Royale on DVD). And while I get the “kids killing each other in a contest” similarity that everyone feels they need to point out, there’s a LOT more going on in The Hunger Games than just that.

I pretty much feel that anyone who tries to draw this comparison really doesn’t know what they’re talking about. They’re making a snap judgment based on wanting to sound like they “liked it when it was cool” and trying to prove that being unwilling to watch or read something popular makes them neato. Well, good for you, but you’re ignoring what’s actually a pretty great and extremely different story. I guess ignorance is bliss though, yeah? Have fun on your pedestal.

Just sayin’.
